Hattrick for Adelinde Cornelissen

By Claartje van Andel - dressagedirect

A freezing sunny winter outside and inside the warm Christmas atmosphere in the Nekkerhal in Mechelen Belgium was the environment for the sixth World Cup™ Qualifier in the Western European League. Once again it was won by Dutch Adelinde Cornelissen aboard Parzival who after Stockholm and London scored a hattrick by winning her third. “It was my third, but not my easiest”, Adelinde reacted. “The Nekkerhal is quite something with the rumour and distractions all around. You all have seen that Parzival had his eyes not only focused on me. I was constantly planning other lines in my choreography to not bring him and myself into difficulties by asking lectures like the pirouettes too much on the borders near the distractions. I succeeded in this, but I have to admit Parzival was a bit on the handbrake too. Of course I prefer more expression, but that asks for the right time and place too.”

Adelinde Cornelissen and Parzival won their third but not easiest World Cup qualifier in Mechelen

Runner up Anky van Grunsven aboard her black stallion IPS Painted Black had other difficulties to cope with. As IPS Painted Black had some mistakes in yesterday’s Grand Prix especially caused by the contact she felt very happy with the looseness, obedience and nice contact of her stallion today. However already in the start of her Freestyle she witnessed a wrong musical cd with a practice-tango-Freestyle was played, not the special and real show edition for IPS Painted Black. “It’s all me to blame, I feel like a beginner”, Anky said. “There are three mistakes I have to count. It started with not packing my cd’s at home myself. The second one was not bringing my official end reserve cd to the organiser myself. And the third and not the least was refraining from the sound check. As IPS Painted Black was really with me this time, I felt even more sorry.”
The third Dutch in the row of prize winners was Olympian Hans Peter Minderhoud aboard Exquis Nadine. He easily could have been the third man to grab the prize. The mare Nadine had wonderful extensions and expressed her easiness for instance in the half passes and transitions to the extreme. However only Isabelle Judet agreed on the win. Wim Ernes felt a bit surprised not to have given Nadine and Hans Peter Minderhoud the highest points. The pirouettes that were performed too big and the piaffe that is a bit out of balance sometimes might have prevented a higher score. “I feel sorry as I had a great feeling, both yesterday and today. I hoped the judges would have given me more advantage of the simplicity and easiness”, Hans Peter said, who also won the two Intermediate classes with his stallion Tango.
Immediately after Minderhoud Jeannette Haazen went for the fourth position. The wonderful and fitting music all mixed and done by Jeannette herself was very cheerful. A higher position was prevented by the missing of the halt in the end and today Nartan did not show the piaffe to his advantage.

Apart from the victorious Dutch in the first four places, the Belgian riders showed nice improvements, to the enthusiasm of the home crowd. For Jeroen Devroe a flash back came over him when he left the arena with his only 8 year old new talent Apollo van het Vijvershof. The remembrance of his late Paganini struck him. “I came to Mechelen to learn. If this is learning, there is a lot of promise in the future with Apollo and it should be a comfort”, Jeroen Devroe said. The best Belgian rider was national champion Stefan van Ingelgem aboard his big stallion Withney van het Genthof. “In four shows I am just happy with any shows’ improvements”, the modest Belgian said. Chair of the judges Mariette Withages praised the field of participants with not only strong Dutch and Belgian competitors but also two Polish competitors who reallt gave nice performances. Olympic bronze medallist Heike Kemmer will not have very good memories to her visit at the Flanders Christmas Horseshow as she was eliminated. Her only 10 year old horse Royal Rubin showed blood in his mouth and the reglement is very clear about that.

Adelinde Cornelissen congratulated by Michel de Bosschere director Ricoh Belgium Pictures Dirk Caremans www.hippofoto.be

The next qualifier in the Western European league will be the Amsterdam Horseshow Jumping Amsterdam from January 20-25. The celebration of the 50th edition of Jumping Amsterdam will only add to the festive spirit of the historical event in the capital of the Netherlands. The London Mounted Metropolitan Police will make it’s debut on the continent and help to celebrate the historical edition by showing their special Activity Ride. The WC™ Freestyle to music will be held at Saturday 24th.

JO, WEG, WORLD CUP etc... derniers infos et commérages !!! - Page 29 Ferra110

JO, WEG, WORLD CUP etc... derniers infos et commérages !!! - Page 29 Ferra_10

JO, WEG, WORLD CUP etc... derniers infos et commérages !!! - Page 29 Lillia10

Two stallions supreme in Zwolle

By Claartje van Andel dressagedirect

Zwolle International used to be a stallion show and although open now for all sexes still the presence of stallions could be seriously felt at Zwolle International. Hans Peter Minderhoud was the winning man in Zwolle and he first showed approved KWPN-stallion IPS Tango to his advantage, winning the Prix St Georges (71,754%) and the Intermediate Freestyle Test (73,800%). Hans Peter Minderhoud showed the stallion very loose and even, with a lot of harmony. A pleasure for the eye, although some tension could not be neglected in the Freestyle.
The second stallion who won his class was the former vice World champion Young Horses BMC Roman Nature, KWPN approved as well. Angela Krooswijk aboard BMC Roman Nature took the win in the Junior Class team test and the individual test (71,315%). The pair is very motivated and secure and leaves nothing to circumstances. Angela Krooswijk was very happy as three of her horses, BMC Roman Nature, Flash and Don Revino, have been promoted to the Dutch A-cadre now. A welcome reward for all training efforts

The biggest class of course is the Grand Prix. The new FEI tests 2009 are the talk of the month those days. Dutch Olympian Hans Peter Minderhoud took his second win by winning the Grand Prix aboard Exquis Escapado (70,297%). However he was not pleased with his own concentration this time. “It’s incredible. I even took the time to watch seven Grand Prix tests and was thinking all the time, let’s not forget the backward strides which have been scratched from the Prix St Georges but came back into the Grand Prix test now! And guess what happened? I just forgot to go backwards!”, Hans Peter commented. As Exquis Escapado showed a lot of remarkable nice things anyway, the win was Hans Peter’s.
The pair also won the GP Freestyle riding at the nice music for Exquis Nadine, created by Joost Peters. “Time for his own Freestyle music now, as Nadine has much bigger strides and I had to adept to Escapado’s steps”, Hans Peter said. It will need some more time though, Hans Peter simply is too busy. He also plans to show Exquis Escapado in two World Cup™ Qualifier Events to have a reserve horse for the Final in Las Vegas if needed. The busy schedule includes competing in the World Cup™ Qualifier in Amsterdam aboard Nadine, than competing aboard Exquis Escapado in the new World Dressage Masters in Palm Beach and than move forward to the finals of the KWPN Stallion competitions in ‘s-Hertogenbosch again.
The runner up position in Grand Prix was taken by Sander Marijnissen aboard Moedwill (Goodwill x Beaujolais). The pair showed a great piaffe and passage, however some tension in the canter work prevented the winning position (68,638%). The next day Sander Marijnissen did a new Freestyle test composed by Charles Montérie which needed some more work. “I was very happy with the extensions but could not make the best use of the choreography and the music now. I had only ridden it once at home”, Sander commented.
The runner up position in the Grand Prix Freestyle now was for KWPN-approved stallion BMC Kigali showed by Marlies van Baalen. In Grand Prix the pair had become third and BMC Kigali had surprised his rider by stopping just before a pirouette. Whether Marlies had been mixed up between pirouettes left and right, which order changed this year compared to last year’s Grand Prix, was uncertain. “Let’s say we had a slight communication problem”, Marlies concluded. However in the Freestyle the pair was there and showed remarkable improvement in piaffe and passage, the easiness in the changes and in the performing of the program. The pair showed on the Sinatra-music which belonged to the stallion Idocus in the early days. Dutch judge Eddy de Wolff van Westerrode commented that he felt the start in the trotting work had not been to the advantage of BMC Kigali as he had noticed some irregularity, which showed in his points. Trainer Johann Hinnemann was happy but said improvements could still be reached by Marlies when she would allow herself and BMC Kigali a little more time in between.

Other classes

No rider could beat the almost unbeatable Rabotalent of the year Lotje Schoots aboard Torricelli in the Young Riders team class (72,456%) and the individual test (72,105%).
The two Belgian ponyriders Noemi Goris and Jorinde Verwimp shared the win with their ponies Alexander Dumas and the grey stallion Tonkawa SD in the first pony team test of Zwolle International (69,814%). Noemi Goris took the individual test Friday morning aboard Alexander Dumas (71,228) and this time Dutch Maria van den Dungen was the runner up aboard the beautiful looking only eight year old black stallion Rembrandt DDH (sired by Renoir) (70,175%). Talking about team pairs in the Dutch A-cadre, Maria van den Dungen already has five ponies at her list, an incredible effort at this young age.

Münster: Capellmann Show

Talking about Münster, the national show in K & K Cup in Münster became the podium for German Olympian Nadine Capellmann. She no less won than three classes. It all started with her Olympic horse Elvis winning the Grand Prix (73,702%) and the Special (74,542%). Aboard 12 year old Raffaldo (sired by Come Back II) Nadine Capellmann did also win the short Grand Prix as a qualifier for the Freestyle.

MISTRAL HOJRIS :

JO, WEG, WORLD CUP etc... derniers infos et commérages !!! - Page 29 Mistra10

... dont EURODRESSAGE s'enthousiaste :

If there is one horse - not ridden by a Dutch or German rider- that could win an individual medal at an Olympics or a World Championships', it would be Laura Bechtolsheimer's Mistral Hojris (by Michellino). Laura was scoring 77% marks in the Grand Prix Special until she made a few mistakes. This horse can challenge Satchmo and Salinero in his performance if the ride stays fault-free.

Traduction :

Anky van Grunsven celebrates victory in Dutch capital

By Claartje van Andel dressagedirect

The celebration of the 50th edition of Jumping Amsterdam, it’s fifth anniversary, received extra attention by the surprising victory of the Dutch triple individual gold medallist Anky van Grunsven aboard her black stallion IPS Painted Black.
The environment for the sixth World Cup™ Qualifier in the Western European League was a sold out house of 5000, a field of participating riders with the strength of the Final already and a growth in prize money for dressage.
Not Dutch Adelinde Cornelissen aboard Parzival after her hattrick by winning the World Cup™ qualifiers in Stockholm, London and Mechelen, nor Grand Prix-winner Isabell Werth aboard Warum Nicht FRH could celebrate the win. Anky van Grunsven aboard IPS Painted Black was almost astonished herself as the 81,25% was a record score for the impressive black stallion. “This was the very first time that IPS Painted Black did show in the arena what he is capable of and what he shows at home. He so often is not with me in the big arena’s. Last summer I could celebrate the win in Lingen aboard Painted with 80%, but this test in Amsterdam even went better now. Although we had an expensive mistake in a pirouette yesterday and had to leave the Grand Prix victory to Isabell Werth, I already was most pleased with Painted as he really was working for me and cooperative. Today he again did prove this. We only had a small mistake in the two tempi changes now, so improvements still can be made. However the biggest improvement is that Painted still has gained power and strength and that’s what makes him better.”
IPS Painted Black never has done his piaffes so energetic and powerful in the show arena before. Anky van Grunsven signed a contract at the Mechelen World Cup™ qualifier short after Christmas with her new sponsor food producer Cavalor. He supplied her with individual diets for all her horses. “This might be the cause for the visible improvement of Painted, as my horses lose weight and their bellies and gain spirit and energy”, she concluded smiling. The only problem for her now seems the FEI World Cup™ Dressage Reglement that has the rule that last year’s winner is automatically qualified when having showed in two qualifiers. “My schedule is to compete with IPS Salinero in the last qualifier in March in ‘s-Hertogenbosch only and not to show in Neumünster or Göteborg. I am not going to compete unless Salinero is top fit and he still needs more time. He has had a long holiday. Probably I can do a request for a wild card, otherwise the sad truth is that I’m not competing in Las Vegas”, Anky concluded.

Dutch Adelinde Cornelissen was faced with major problems in the Grand Prix yesterday when her horse Parzival was disturbed by rumour and flashlights and got scared to death. She was not able to finish her test and retired.
Isabell Werth had some major problems in her ride today. In the start of her Freestyle Warum Nicht FRH in the first half pass lost the trotting rhythm and cantered instead. The answer of Isabell was riding less energetic as she usually does, which caused more mistakes, a big mistake in the one tempi changes and a little one in the two tempi’s. The result was the runner up position. Isabell said: “My ‘Hannes’ was better than me today. I don’t know why I disturbed him in the half pass, probably I came in with my aids too fast. Than the mistakes in the changes occurred. It happens. Next time better!” Isabell Werth plans to compete Satchmo in Neumünster and ‘s-Hertogenbosch. After that she will decide which horse to bring to the FEI World Cup™ Dressage Final in Las Vegas.
Olympian Hans Peter Minderhoud aboard Exquis Nadine overall felt not very satisfied with his third place. The mare had wonderful extensions and half passes, however Hans Peter had his hands full. “She is a bit in season and was not too easy to handle. Probably it looked good, however I have had a better feeling in London for example”, he said. A better feeling in London also had Kyra Kyrklund. She said: “Max improved in strength and he really takes me. Unfortunately today he left me alone in a pirouette. Too bad. We all play with the limits and this can happen.”
Apart from Anky van Grunsven the most happy Dutch rider was Jeannette Haazen. She was playing with the limits with her big Nartan as well but succeeded. No single step failed and the piaffes were done as never before. “This was my best test ever!”, the small Jeannette smiled who recovered from a very bad carr accident in the beginning of last year’s World Cup season. “It all fitted like a T. A big reward for our perseverance.”

The Dutch hymne in attendance of HRH Queen Beatrix was played for Anky van Grunsven. Here she is congratulated by BMC director Albert Jansen and Eva Salomon, FEI director dressage

Chair of the judges Wim Ernes praised the competitors who gave the judges an exciting time to judge. “No one of us could guess in forehand who was going to win with this first class field. It was great fun to judge!” Also show director Rogier van Iersel praised the riders. “The riders make the competition and they took care of a thrilling spectacle. It’s the nicest present show organisers can receive so I really want to thank them for that!”

Record score Peters in WDM Masters Grand Prix

The inaugural Exquis World Dressage Masters debuted at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Club on Friday, Jan. 30. The brisk weather made for some frisky horses but the USA’s star from the 2008 Olympic Games shone brighter than ever.
Steffen Peters, who travelled from San Diego, California, for the occasion with Aikiko Yamazaki’s Ravel put on a performance that was very much the best of the Grand Prix - and the highest score of Peters’career.

Against some of the world’s best riders, including reigning Olympic Gold medallist Anky van Grunsven, Peters showed the world an improved version of his horse, who, in his fourth place effort at the 2008 Olympic Games in Hong Kong, was already seriously impressive. Undefeated until the Olympic Games, Peters started a new winning streak in 2009, and took home the biggest slice of the €10,000 ($13,000) for the Grand Prix. The Grand Prix Special and the Grand Prix Freestyle on Saturday take the total prize money for the event to €100,000 (US$130,000).
“All I can say is that the horse makes it look good,” said Peters. “He was so honest today, he was very forward and very, very supple. Sometimes you go in there and some tests are more work, but today it was honestly pure fun. He offered every movement and it was honestly one of the best rides I’ve ever had.”
On a score of 75.574%, Peters won easily and looks poised for another crowd-pleasing freestyle Saturday night under the lights in the International Arena.

Ravel, who at 13 has matured in the last six months, was unfazed by his surroundings, attentive and accurate throughout the test. A leaner, stronger version of the horse who wowed the world in his first Grand Prix appearance outside the US at the Olympic Games did not disappoint his fans at home. “This has the feeling of a major championship,” said Peters, who was recently named USEF Equestrian of the Year for 2008. “Its amazing to compete in a horse community like Wellington.”

Using this WDM format for the first time, and with more than $150,000 prize money on the line, the competition came from across the globe and was fierce, but no one was getting close to Ravel.
Van Grunsven, who was a strong favorite, had a very uncharacteristic test on Painted Black and barely made the cut to the freestyle. The beautiful, black Dutch stallion was unsettled in the atmosphere and then very surprisingly, Van Grunsven made two errors of course. Their score of 66.936% was a shock for everyone.
“I don’t even want to think about it anymore,” said the Dutch rider after her test. “It was his first outdoor, he was too wild. He started to spook. As he was really, really good in the warming up I thought ok I’m fine and then stupid me forgot the rein back... and then he didn’t really take to the passage/piaffe. And then got really scared on the short side by the judges. I don’t know why. He’s never afraid and never spooky. The rest of the test I was really trying to get him there and because its a new test I was just focusing on him because he was so afraid and I completely screwed up myself. I did the wrong test two times. I’m very embarrassed, it will never happen again. He was completely different than normal.”

Canadian Ashley Holzer and Pop Art put in a very polished performance. This pair also looked to have benefited from their trip to Hong Kong last summer. They finished on a score of 71.319% for runner up position. This score bettered the one the duo earned a week ago at the Gold Coast Opener, where they were awarded a 70.298% for the win.

“It was incredible to have the European competitors here,” remarked Holzer. “Since I drew third to go in the ring, and right after Anky van Grunsven, I had made a pact with myself to aim for a clean accurate test. I think that getting used to this new test takes a little bit. I didn’t push, push, push. I just went for a clean test,” said Holzer.
Olympian Hans-Peter Minderhoud, from The Netherlands was third with Exquis Escapado on 71.149%.

The top eight riders had the choice to ride in the Freestyle for 60,000 Euros and the remaining 11 will perform the Grand Prix Special Saturday afternoon for 30,000 Euros.
Two American combinations made their choice for the freestyle: Jane Hannigan and Maksymillian, and Peters and Ravel. Michael Barisone declared for the Grand Prix Special with Neruda, which allowed for Van Grunsven to move into the Freestyle.

Peters knows, that despite van Grunsven’s disaster today, she won’t go down in the Freestyle without a fight.
“Let’s face it, Anky did this in Amsterdam too! The first day didn’t go so well and then it was a hell of a freestyle,” said Peters. “The freestyle has been working great so far, but we have to step it up again for tomorrow.”

Van Grunsven Wins Freestyle at inaugural Exquis World Dressage Masters in Palm Beach

By Joanie Morris/ US Equestrian Federation, Lynndee Kemmet and Claartje van Andel dressagedirect

Expectations or a false start never can bring triple Olympic individual gold medallist Anky van Grunsven on the wrong foot. Anky van Grunsven is never lost without having performed her final step. The Dutch rider showcased all of her experience and all of the quality of her stallion IPS Painted Black and he delivered when the stakes were high. Their score of 79.6 percent and an unanimous decision of the five judges in the Exquis World Dressage Masters Freestyle meant the Dutch rider took home a lucrative reward of more than $21,000 at the inaugural Exquis World Dressage Masters.

The Exquis World Dressage Masters finale showcased the world’s best dressage riders under the lights in the International Arena at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Club on Saturday night. The temperature was unseasonably low, but the quality of dressage was seriously high.
The reigning Olympic Champion, Anky van Grunsven, lived dangerously in the Grand Prix on Friday. She only qualified for the Freestyle when the USA’s Michael Barisone opted for the Grand Prix Special. IPS Painted Black was uncooperative throughout the Grand Prix and Van Grunsven made two errors of course. In the freestyle, like Grand Prix-winner Steffen Peters already had predicted, those mistakes were a thing of the past.
“He was fine,” Van Grunsven said of her ride under the lights on the Dutch stallion. “Yesterday I was really surprised he was so spooky. Today I was really happy with him. Last weekend in Amsterdam he might have been a bit more flashy, but with the trip and the strange weather I can only be very, very happy with how Painted Black was today. He tried and no mistakes... Our confidence was back again!”
Anky van Grunsven had much praise for the concept of the World Dressage Masters, which consists of four competitions – the first one in the U.S. and three more in Europe. Van Grunsven said the prize money given out at each Master’s competition isn’t much compared to what the show jumpers win, “but for us, it’s wonderful.” She admitted it was a bit of a hike for Europeans to come to America, but was only fair considering that so many Americans have to travel to Europe. “Americans always come to Europe. Maybe Europeans coming to America will help make dressage more popular in America.”

America’s hopes were high when Steffen Peters, who convincingly won the Grand Prix on Friday, went to task with his incredibly difficult Freestyle with Ravel. The 12-year-old Dutch gelding that has been showed by Edward Gal in lower classes always tries. However two mistakes early in the test made it an uphill climb for his San Diego rider Peters. It wasn’t enough. Ravel and Peters ended up third on a score of 76.6 percent. They took home more than $11,000 for their effort in the Freestyle.
“He was a little fresh in the warm-up,” said Peters. “So in the first piaffe, I maybe went into it a little bit too passively and he took a walk step. When I corrected him he said, ‘That’s not a good idea’. I was very, very happy with the last two piaffes. There were wonderful moments in the test but the big mistakes were evident.”
Ravel, who is owned by Akiko Yamazaki, was unsettled in the first piaffe, throwing his head up briefly and made a mistake in the beginning of the canter work, but he improved throughout the difficult test and by the end was really sparkling.
“We were very sorry for Steffen because it was a wonderful ride except for a couple of small resistances,” said Great Britain’s Stephen Clarke, who was president of the Ground Jury.
“The bottom line is every single horse gets a little smart in the arena,” said Peters. “He’s been so consistent and so honest. This took me a little bit by surprise. At the end of the day they’re just horses and we’re humans and these things do happen.”

Grand Prix-winner Steffen Peters aboard Ravel had predicted the win of Anky in the Freestyle. However this time it was his turn for mistakes and Ravel took him by surprise and the pair ended third Picture Mary Phelps www.horsesdaily.com

Hans-Peter Minderhoud, who was a teammate of van Grunsven in Hong Kong where the Dutch team won silver slipped ahead of Peters with a crowd-pleasing performance on Exquis Escapado.
“The last six months he’s improved a lot,” said Minderhoud of the 16-year-old veteran who was placed individually sixth at the European Championships in 2005 by British Carl Hester and than caught the eye of sponsor Exquis. Unfortunately after a short period of making acquintance to each other, a long injury left Exquis Escapado aside. “Today he did his best freestyle ever”, Hans-Peter was convinced. Chair of the judges British Stephen Clarke said Minderhoud’s ride “was a beautiful ride with real impulsion and lightness.”
His Dutch partner and crowd pleaser Edward Gal aboard still unexperienced Interfloor’s Next One ended fifth, a great reward for a consistent and patient schooling.
A fourth place was reserved for Canadian Ashley Holzer aboard Pop Art who is a winter resident in Florida and wins a lot.

The top eight riders got to chose if they wanted to ride in the Freestyle or the Special. All the riders in the freestyle finished above 70 percent, a testament to the level of dressage. There was one withdrawal from Saturday’s competition and that was the popular mare Rocher, the mount of George Williams, due to a minor lameness in a hind leg.

Barisone gambles to win in Special

Michael Barisone had a tough decision to make after his fifth place finish in the Grand Prix on Friday. The New Jersey-based rider made the cut for the lucrative Freestyle but made a tremendous gesture of sportsmanship allowing van Grunsven into the Freestyle and opting for the Grand Prix Special instead. The gamble paid off.
Barisone and Jane Sulwasky’s Neruda put in a stunning effort in the Grand Prix Special and won with a score of 69.292 percent over Tosca Visser-van der Meer and Moorland Opportunity from The Netherlands.
“These guys have made such an effort to come from Europe,” said Barisone. “Thousands of people are coming tonight to see Anky. I felt it was the right thing to do to ride in the Special and let her into the Freestyle. Anky was ninth, the difference was tiny but if it makes a big difference to let them see Anky. It is my responsibility to the organizers and sponsors to let the people who are going to fill this place up come to see the people they are paying to see.”

Barisone and Neruda cantered off with $9,500 bringing his two day winnings close to $14,000. The Dutch gelding served as the reserve horse for Barisone at the 2008 Olympic Games in Hong Kong last summer. He never got his chance in the ring in China but made an impression on the dressage world today.

“Obviously Steffen and Ashley and Anky, of course, are going to be really strong,”said Barisone after his afternoon ride. “I have several reasons why I did the Special. I had a really incredible time being on the team in Hong Kong. I really want to go to Kentucky for the 2010 Alltech FE I World Equestrian Games next year... That means that your first test has to be the good one. The consistency of riding the Grand Prix, the way it is written on paper, I thought it was more important to ride a set test.”

Barisone was pleased with Neruda’s effort, out of all the tests he’s performed with the 14-year-old gelding, this one ranked about third.
“We never worry about the piaffe and passage with this horse,” said Barisone. “But I'm working really hard on changes to level it out. Credibility is what I need. It worked out great today but even if it hadn't, it would be OK. We are trying to build the sport.”
Behaving like that and saying it, the organisers will have felt that the first place had been rewarded to the right rider, as they are building the sport themselves also and feel the same responsibility.

American Arlene ‘Tuny’ Page was third with Wild One and was honoured for her efforts in helping to pull off the very first World Dressage Masters in Wellington.
The night ended with a reining exhibition by Van Grunsven. She considers the second sport to be her hobby but looks very completely at home in a Western saddle.

Mince alors!!! Chapeau Anky!!

Dear Pia,

News from the World of Dressage

Beatrice Bürchler-Keller refrains from judging in 2009

Due to various circumstances as well as personal reasons, the Swiss Dressage “O” Judge Beatrice Bürchler-Keller decided not to judge during the 2009 season. Mrs Bürchler-Keller already informed the FEI about her decision at the end of December 2008.

Special bracelet for Anky

The 50th edition of Jumping Amsterdam started with a special gala called ‘Join Jumping Gala’. A special auction was organised for the benefit of sports for the disabled, something main sponsor BMC Group is very much in favour of. One of the special items auctioned was a bracelet made with hairs from the tails of Olympic gold medal winners 2000 Bonfire (Van Grunsven) and De Sjiem (Dubbeldam). Wim Zegwaard bought the bracelet and presented it to Anky van Grunsven, an emotional gift. “Those two amazing horses have been in the same flight box on the aircraft from Amsterdam to Sydney. It’s still a remarkable coincidence”, Anky remembered.

Steffen Peters honoured with Whitney Stone Cup

Steffen Peters, 44, of San Diego, California, is the recipient of the Whitney Stone Cup. Peters was presented with the award at the USET Foundation Cocktail Reception on January 30 at The Players Club in Wellington, Florida.
The Whitney Stone Cup is awarded annually to an active competitor who displays consistent excellence in international competition and high standards of sportsmanlike conduct while serving as an ambassador for the United States and equestrian sport.
Peters is the 29th rider to receive the Whitney Stone Cup. Expressing his reaction when he learned he’d been selected for the prestigious award, Peters said, “This was certainly a big honor, especially when I read later on what defines this honor. That was very special, considering all the people that have won this award before me. To be among that group feels very, very special. It certainly means a lot to receive this award.”

Anky van Grunsven Reins Supreme on AQHA in Wellington, Florida

As we have reported, Anky van Grunsven, the world’s top dressage rider, wowed the crowds at the Exquis World Dressage Masters competition by winning the Grand Prix Musical Freestyle on the black stallion IPS Painted Black. The Dutch rider followed her win by showing the crowd she reigns supreme in other equestrian disciplines when she performed a reining exhibition under the lights at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center (PBIEC) in Wellington, Florida.

Dressed in full western regalia, van Grunsven looked just as comfortable in a western saddle executing lead changes, stops and reining patterns as she did in her dressage saddle performing piaffes and passages. It turns out that van Grunsven’s passion for dressage is followed closely by her new passion for reining.
Van Grunsven, one of the most decorated riders in dressage history, now has her sights set on the 2010 World Equestrian Games where she hopes to compete in both dressage and reining. During her stay in Wellington for the World Dressage Masters, van Grunsven secretly trained with reining experts Jon and Seth Ingram at their Ingram Training Stable in Loxahatchee. She trained for two mornings at Ingram’s Training Stable and followed up her lessons with a reining demonstration in front of a packed house at the Exquis World Dressage Masters, riding the champion reining horse Dixie Dynasty owned by Jackson Mitich of Loxahatchee.
Van Grunsven’s performances – both dressage and reining -- turned out to be real crowd pleasers and the perfect ending to one of the most exciting dressage events to take place in Wellington.

Breeding and dressage

2009 Stallion Selection in Den Bosch started with KWPN College

Especially for all foreign visitors the first day of the KWPN Stallion Selection presented a KWPN College in English. There was a lecture on functionality and conformation of horses from the KWPN’s four breeding directions, illustrated by several demonstration horses presented in-hand and under the saddle in the ring. Next, several Stallion Selection Committee members discussed the role of the performance test in the selection process. The performance test training and evaluation process was also demonstrated. Stallion Selection Committee members Pieter Kersten and Daan Nanning discussed the jumping bred horses; and Wim Ernes, and former Committee member Frenk Jespers discussed the dressage horses. In addition, Olympic medal winner Rolf Goran Bengtsson talked about his mount Ninja, an outstanding example of what KWPN horses can achieve! Olympic rider Hans-Peter Minderhoud explained the qualities of his outstanding mare Nadine. The KWPN College moderator was Maria Henneman, providing the link between the experts in the ring and the audience.

Lingh and Edward Gal united for once

Edward Gal who brought the renown KWPN-approved Lingh to great results and popularity will be united for once to ride in Sweden for the Swedish selectors for the Studbook February 13. The present owner of Lingh, American Karin Offield, has asked Edward Gal this favour. He said the favour was his! Lingh is stationed at Flyinge in Sweden and is prepared by Mattias Janson who trained with Anky van Grunsven. Edward Gal can’t wait to have one more given chance to show Lingh, the Dutch rider said.

Hanoverian Studbook welcomed in Finland

The international Hanoverian family has grown by a member in the north of Europe. On the last day of January about 25 friends of the Hanoverian met at the stud farm of Helena Niiranen near the riders village Ypäjä and established a Finnish Hanoverian breeding club, the Finnish Hanoverian Society.

The committed Hanoverian breeder Miia Ojala from Tammela was elected president. She had already been a driving force in the working group who had prepared the foundation of the society. Vice-president became Helena Niiranen. Pia Karhu, Vampulla, presented the goals of the society which are f.i. an annual Hanoverian Show, breeders’s trips to Germany as well as the creation of a Finnish website.
Dr. Ludwig Christmann, in charge of Hanoverian breeding abroad at Hannoveraner Verband, had already got an impression of the commitment of Finnish breeders on occasion of a seminar he held at Ypäjä last September.
There is great enthusiasm for horses in this Scandinavian country, he said. “The positive development of horse sport and breeding is a trend we also see in other northern countries. Very impressive is the Finnish interest in the developments in Germany and the detailed knowledge about the offer of stallions.”

Education and clinics

Record crowd at 11th Trainer seminar Ermelo around Hinnemann and Hamminga

At the 11th KNHS Trainer Seminar held January 17th at the center of the Royal Dutch Equestrian Federation in Ermelo The Netherlands a record crowd of 550 was attracted by the appealing program showing German Ridemaster Johann Hinnemann and the Dutch chief instructor Johan Hamminga. Theme of the day was ‘Schakelen in harmony’.
“The Dutch have this nice word ‘schakelen’, which means something like ‘flexible switching in transitions to improve everything else, like the contact, impulsion and throughness’”, Johann Hinnemann explained. A lot of horses and riders showed the theme, all with their own specific strength and weaknesses. “Some weaknesses are in the exterior or interior of the horse and will play their role until schooling to Grand Prix. The more important it is to stuck to the schooling plan and always go back to the basic steps like the ability to stretch, and not only losing yourself in the high abilities for more demanding lectures”, Johan Hamminga said, who became internationally known by his pupil Adelinde Cornelissen and Parzival.
Johann Hinnemann said in the end that education only just starts when horses are brought into the position and attitude to be able to receive their education. That’s the first step. And than the ‘schakelen’ can begin!

Wellington Classic Dressage/DressageClinic.com a Huge Hit

The Professional Riders Clinic and Symposium, held Jan. 16-17 at the Jim Brandon Equestrian Center in Florida USA, brought together many of world’s leading riders for two educational days in an elegant setting. And one thing’s for sure, the riders lucky enough to receive an invitation to the clinic weren’t disappointed.
The event featured Hubertus Schmidt as the lead clinician, but also included educational sessions with Steffen Peters, Bo Jena and Laura King. Among the demo riders were many of America’s top competitors and trainers, including Betsey Steiner and Charlotte Bredahl. It was a unique symposium. Held in the evening under the covered arena, it was an elegant affair complete with table clothes, wine and scrumptious food.
Around 300 people attended the symposium hosted by Wellington Classic Dressage and DressageClinic.com. Noreen O’Sullivan said the symposium met the two-fold goal behind its creation, to be both educational and entertaining.
O’Sullivan and Flanagan said the symposium fit a mission of Wellington Classic Dressage to support the sport of dressage by making it more accessible and appealing.
Schmidt has a reputation for being not only an excellent trainer and rider, but also a great teacher and demo rider Shannon Dueck said that reputation certainly proved to be true. “Hubertus is an excellent communicator and one of the best trainers in the world. I was thrilled to be able to ride with him. I had a great lesson and got a lot out of it because he is very good at getting his point across.” What she liked best of all, however, was watching Schmidt ride. ”It was so educational to watch his reactions and what he asked of the horse and how. It was a good way to see how I want to ride.” Shannon Dueck shares the opinion of all European visitors of the Global Dressage Forum 2008 who chose to invite Hubertus Schmidt back again and especially got enthusiast because of his riding skills.

Best Freestyle-score so far Werth and Satchmo

By Claartje van Andel dressagedirect

The seventh WC™ event in the Holstenhalle in Neumünster marked real brilliance in the winning test of Isabell Werth on Satchmo. It brought excitement for a record score of the World Cup™ Season so far. “I have never seen Satchmo this good before”, said the chair of the judges Mariette Withages-Dieltjens. The Olympic individual silver medallist Isabell Werth agreed with that. She said: “I already was happy with the behaviour of Satchie in Grand Prix yesterday while he showed relaxation and happiness in the arena. The Holstenhalle in Neumünster is small and has a special atmosphere. It’s never a certainty how the reaction of your horse will be. Today in the Freestyle the atmosphere with all horse loving people from the region again was top and so was Satchmo. He really enjoyed himself while performing and simply did his job without one single mistake or wrong reaction!”.
Chair Mariette Withages rewarded Satchmo for one of the half passes in canter with the ultimate ten and she gave a lot of eights and nines.

Isabell Werth and Satchmo were rewarded with nines and the ultimate ten for their half passes and did their best Freestyle performance ever according to Mariette Withages and Wim Ernes Picture Karl Heinz Frieler www.reitsportfoto.de

Another ultimate ten was given for the piaffe of the 19 year old grey Balagur showed by Russian Alexandra Korelova. The willingness and eagerness of the former police horse Balagur to perform is amazing! Not a single mistake occurred in doing so, taking the runner up position. Alexandra Korelova and Balagur even bet their trainer Monica Theodorescu aboard Whisper. Whisper is getting stronger and it seems his piaffe is improving too. The pleasant test was rewarded with third position.

Bad luck
British Laura Bechtolsheimer did a wonderful test with her talented Mistral Hojris but mistakes in the one tempi changes and two tempi changes and a lack of relaxation in the final halt cost her some points.
Nathalie zu Sayn Wittgenstein had made her mistakes in Grand Prix yet, thus receiving one of the first starting positions. It was her turn to improve in the Freestyle. She rode the Freestyle test without mistakes although it could have been a bit more powerful. She improved her Amsterdam-results and was rewarded with some valuable points for the standings.
Jeannette Haazen had to withdraw from competing as family circumstances left her home.

Tension is building up towards the Final
A very harmonious test was showed by American Catherine Haddad on Maximus. She was the second competitor to come in. The crowd really went crazy, understanding the theme and clapping and yelling for Maximus. He now performed his movements without mistakes on the filmic music of the Gladiator about emperor Maximus. She improved her results from Mechelen and Amsterdam and therefore took some valuable World Cup™ points as well. It was the more remarkable as in Neumünster Haddad also won the other Grand Prix and Grand Prix Special on Cadillac. “This is one of my bigger weekends in Europe!”, the American rider said who made the German Vechta to her home. Catherine Haddad recently has signed with Schockemöhle Sports to extend their sponsoring contract for 2009. Schockemöhle Sports has sponsored Haddad since 2007 and produces its own line of riding clothes, bridles, saddles, rugs and much more. In her turn Haddad will assist in the development of new products through intensive testing and will offer feedback on the developing product line.
Franz Schockemöhle, manager of Schockemöhle sports, is the nephew of Paul Schockemöhle. This year Schockemöhle and his part6ner Ullrich Kassellmann also took over the reigns from the Neumünster organisers. The new commitments coming nicely together hardly can be a coincidence.
“I’m hoping a big future with all my horses and it’s a great honour for me to have the support of Schockemöhle Sports as a sponsor and immediately doing so well”, Haddad said. She has set her heart on competing in the final in Las Vegas. Her schedule includes this week’s Gothenburg Horseshow where she will show Cadillac in the World Cup™ qualifier.

To meet the criteria of the reglement which include two WC starts Anky van Grunsven and IPS Salinero will travel to Gothenburg as well to ride this show, as well as the last European Qualifier in s’-Hertogenbosch in March. Isabell Werth has chosen to compete in Bremen, Dortmund and the last qualifier in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, after which she will make the decision which horse to bring to Las Vegas. The gambling metropolis is the host of the World Cup Finals Show Jumping and Dressage in April.
Werth gave her World Cup Final 2007 winning mount, Warum Nicht FRH, the weekend free: “I have ridden Satchmo at the World Cup shows where the arenas are smaller, such as Frankfurt and here, because the arena in Las Vegas is also small”, she explained. Plenty of sport also brought plenty of spectators to the VR Classics in the Holstenhalle. Alone during the day there were 4,100 visitors for the competitions in Neumunster and in the evening there were approximately 5,000 who strolled through the Holstenhalle and adjacent exhibition and warm-up areas. “I have to add, after Neumünster today Satchie is already half boarded!”, Isabell smiled.
